Hailing from Long Island, Sarah Gross has created her own unique brand of Americana that draws from various influences. Sarah had an affinity for music ever since taking the stage as a dancer in her younger years. She believes that this is what shaped her intentionality with music growing up. Her love for dancing led her to want to move people whether that be physically or emotionally.
Linda Ronstadt and Carole King are just a few of Sarah’s influences that have demonstrated what it takes to be multifaceted in music. “Neither of these artists choose to confine to one genre, and their catalog takes you through the evolution of their sound”, says Sarah. Being a native of Long Island, Sarah does not fail to recognize the history and stories that are encompassed there. The history of her home inspired her to say, “I was infatuated by its storytelling. There is something so special about listening to someone like Dolly Parton tell a story. Even though it often isn’t a personal anecdote, it can be told in a way that applies to everyone. Country music remains nostalgic in its roots but ever changing with the times too. There is a long ancestry of country music artists that we all cherish and I think that is really special and unique to this genre.” A performance at a house party on Halloween in 2019 propelled Sarah to have the confidence to put out country music. “It can be a scary thing to put out music, you feel like you are giving the world a piece of yourself that maybe you would otherwise keep private.” Having previously stuck to performing funk-pop music, she didn’t think anyone would care to hear her sing her country song, “Arizona.” The response was overwhelming. She realized that even drunk college students would feel connected to her sad country song. Sarah knew that she had to continue writing music that was genuine to her, music that she could be proud of. After months of months of working on her debut album, Sarah is still working on new music! She is looking forward to the upcoming season being full of collaboration with other musicians. Sarah truly wants to be an artist that supports artists around her, a believer in fate and positive energy she says, “I hope that in supporting other artists, good karma will help push my music further. I think everything happens for a reason, and people who put in hard work will see good results. As long as I am being authentic and surrounding myself with good people, I will be happy.” Sarah released her debut album, “Songs from the Passenger Seat” on December 11th, 2020. Sarah’s music can be found on all streaming services and you can follow her on social media at @sarahgrossmusic. Author: Haley Moloney
