Maggie McClure, one half of The Imaginaries, lent her and her husband, Shane Henry’s vocal and song writing talents to a movie soundtrack! The soundtrack for the film “A Cowboy’s Song”, can be found here, and the movie is out today! McClure explains that, “I first worked with the director, Timothy (Armstrong) in 2011 and have done a bunch of other projects with him since. “For this movie, Shane and I had a very early version of the script and we went through it where we got ideas of song titles. We really wanted each song to have a purpose. Timothy sent over lyric ideas that he had, and we would talk through each scene and what was needed when it comes to the emotion, tempo and time signature. I was so excited for this opportunity. The music business is like the wild west and we work hard at so many things and you always have to say yes. We didn’t know much going into this movie, but we have learnt so much. Everything ended up great and worth it!” Maggie and Shane started the song writing process for the film in December 2020 and wrote until March 2021.
A full circle moment in the movie production process for McClure was when she was on set seeing her and Shane’s songs being used by the actors. “It was so inspiring to see songs that I wrote, and that Shane wrote fulfilling its purpose. It felt like a reminder to me to take the time to create what you are inspired by. We get so involved in the business that if I get a creative thought, I need to stop and write it down because look where that thought could lead, a set of a movie”. While song writing is very personal to some, Maggie thought it was weird at first to hear someone else sing a song she wrote at first but is now inspired by it because songs can have different meanings to everyone; “I would have felt weirder about it 10 years ago but I have matured and there are things bigger than me and we recognize that the song is meant to be sung by someone else as it does connect with someone else”. Maggie always wanted to be a singer songwriter but was shy growing up. When she was in high school, she was in some musicals but always in the background roles. “I have always been inspired by female singer songwriters who play piano like Sarah McLachlan, Bonnie Raitt, Nora Jones, and Sara Bareilles”. McClure got the opportunity to open for Bareilles at a concert in 2010. When Maggie was starting out, she got bit by the acting bug and moved to LA for 6 years. where she pursued a handful of entertainment opportunities like singing on tv shows, in movies, and even got a role on The Middle for three episodes! “The music and film worlds collide so much and really and go hand in hand. I have had over 50 song placements in TV Shows and Movies, but I never thought I’d find myself on a set playing a big part of the film’s production and seeing it come to life!” Make sure you keep up with Maggie and Shane on Instagram at @imaginariesband, as well as Maggie’s own page at @maggiemcclure.
