German folk artist, KAH, recently released her latest single, “I Can’t Have You” on April 19th. Listen here. This song dives deep into the complexities of longing and the fear of disappointment. With a message that resonates with audiences worldwide, KAH's highly anticipated release has captivated introspective hearts and minds alike.

Growing up, Hanne Kah remembers seeing very little queer and powerful female musicians, especially in Germany. As a queer woman who has always wanted to make music, KAH grew up to be the inspiration that she had been aching for as a child. But one female artist did stand out to Hanne Kah, as a child and even today- “the person who really inspired me to be brave, to go out there and pursue my dream was Brandi Carlile. The moment I listened to her music was the moment I started to write music and book gigs.” Being that same powerful symbol for the LGBTQ+ community and a symbol of pride for that community is part of what makes KAH so spectacular and unique in the German and folk music industry. KAH hopes that she can reach as many people as possible worldwide and show them that they are always loved and always important.

This new song, “I Can’t Have You,” absolutely accomplishes that goal as it is so relatable and powerful. Inspired by a detective novel Kah read years ago, this song is about the beauty of relationships and the stories they tell, whether they are romantic relationships or not. At the end of the mystery novel, a man walks a woman home- a woman he is deeply in love with but can never have. Telling his story, Kah poetically states that “he couldn’t tell her he loved her in that moment. All he could do was walk her home- that’s all that mattered for now”. She finds it funny how many friends, family members, and acquaintances have been reaching out to her, asking if she wrote this song about them. That is why “I Can’t Have You” is so powerful. Anyone can relate to bits and pieces, or even the story as a whole. Heartache, longing, and the fear of disappointment are feelings not unfamiliar to most of us. KAH hopes that the message we take from her lyrics is to never question yourself in a relationship. She says that “not all relationships work out in the ways we want them to. And most of the time, those setbacks have nothing to do with us as people.” Relationships and human connections are beautiful, romantic or not. This is why we have to enjoy that beauty and live in the moment- even if all you can do for now is walk the one you love home.

“I Can’t Have You” will be part of a larger album set to release later this summer. KAH is ecstatic to announce she will be returning to the US to share her new album in states such as Virginia, Texas, Tennessee, and hopefully so much more! Being the queer inspiration she is as a female artist, KAH wants to share to her fans - “Don’t let your sexuality, your identity, how people perceive you be what sets you back from your dreams. Know that you are loved and know that you have so much support in whatever you set out to accomplish.” Take this lovely message and follow your own dreams! And make sure to keep an eye out for dates when KAH will be in the US and release the rest of her new album to accompany her single, “I Can’t Have You.”
