Up and coming folk and INDIE artist, Aslin is beyond excited to release her newest song, “Wings”. This song is available wherever you stream your music here. A song written in the rafters of a big, old barn, “Wings” is a heartfelt ode to the people we have in life who we know will always love and support us. For Aslin, this song “is an ode to [her] mother and a thank you for all that she’s done for [her]. It’s really a song about love and gratitude.” The very first line being “I was raised in the mouth of a crocodile” signifies how she constantly feels “on the edge of my seat” going from one big life moment to the next. But with the warm embrace and love coming from Aslin’s mom, she never felt like she couldn’t handle anything that life threw at her. Especially when it came to her music, Aslin always had the support of her family and friends.
In 2023, Aslin attended a Steve Earle songwriting camp that has really helped her develop and define herself as an artist. The camp consisted of classes taught by Earle as well as guest lecturers- one of which being Shawn Colvin, who made a huge impact on Aslin’s music and was “such an inspiration during this time in [Aslin’s] life.” This song, “Wings” was actually written at this camp in a big barn in the middle of a field. Aslin fondly remembers the warm sunny day and the rustic feeling in the barn when she says, “as I was looking out at the mountains we could see from the barn, this song just started spilling out of me. I actually couldn’t stop writing for hours!” “Wings” is part of a bigger album called “Inflight” that is set to be released later this summer. Consisting of around five songs, this album mirrors the thoughts, emotions, and even fears surrounding this transition phase Aslin faces as she emerges from college life. Birds taking flight and leaving the safety of their nests, butterflies transforming from caterpillars into beautiful and graceful beings, are both great points of symbolism in the album “Inflight” and the imagery of them both have a great impact in each song. Nature, transformation, love, and gratitude are big concepts in this project Aslin is looking forward to sharing. Being from Portland, Oregon, the Pacific Northwest is a big part of what makes Aslin the woman she is today. In her young childhood, Aslin’s mother introduced her to artists like Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstandt, and others of that variety. At the time, like any other child would, she thought her mom’s music taste was not interesting and not her style. But these artists have come to be some of Aslin’s greatest inspirations in her own music- and her mother her biggest supporter. Beginning her songwriting career with musical theater in high school, Aslin has made for herself a powerful support system of people from home- “I loved being in plays and musicals but found that writing and performing my own music was really where my passion lies” Aslin says as she reminisces about home. In high school, she was part of various projects that consisted of rap, pop, rock, and some others until Aslin began to find her own sound and started working independently from her high school friends. Now she considers her sound to be closer to INDIE Rock and even leaning more into folk and country as the years go on. Aslin reflects, “As I listened more to songs from Soccer Mommy, Phoebe Bridgers, and even the Chicks, I felt more seen than any of the music I’d listened to or been part of before.” As Aslin develops her sound and her image, she is planning a tour for her album in the Southeast and Pacific Northwest! She will hit places such as North Carolina and Tennessee, all the way over to Washington and Oregon. Keep an eye out for dates of this tour set to happen in October and November of 2024 and be sure to listen to her new song “Wings”!
