 Author: Charles Hacker Canadian country singer-songwriter ANNIKA has released two songs! Check out “Love Looks Like You” here and “Encore” here. The first newly released song, “Love Looks Like You”, was written as a “classic, first dance wedding song. It has a timeless song and lyrics. It is all about finding your person”. The song “Encore” is a duet with Canadian country artist and friend of ANNIKA’s, Brett Kissel. “The song was written with 4 men and it was interesting because you all have different perspectives and experiences. The song was originally written for a male artist, but I wanted the song for myself. I thought it would be a great duet because both male and female voice paints a better painting”. ANNIKA’s husband is the drummer in Brett Kissel’s band. “I asked Brett not knowing what he would say, and he wrote back in 10 minutes saying yes!”.
ANNIKA was born and raised in Calgary, Canada. She is the youngest of 5 kids and they all grew up playing music! They all played piano and a string instrument. In grade 8, ANNIKA started writing songs. She dreamt of being on Broadway. At 16, she appeared on Canadian idol. Her Canadian Idol experience made her realize she wanted to be an artist but at the time, she did not think she was good enough. The Calgary artist went to school, got an accounting degree and then became a singer on a cruise ship, “I got to see the world and get better at my craft. I got to write songs that entire time”. ANNIKA grew up loving country music. “I love Shania Twain and I didn’t realize how Shania (Twain) was pushing boundaries in country (music) and making pop country happen”. After the cruise ship, ANNIKA formed the musical duo “Leaving Thomas” with artist Bryton Udy, the duo went their own ways after 4 years. ANNIKA hopes to play at the Saddledome, the big arena in her hometown one day. A venue where she has seen many concerts like Carrie Underwood and Shania Twain, “It would be a really full circle moment in front of your city, in the stadium I grew up in”. ANNIKA wants aspiring artists to know that you should “write as many songs as you can and with as many people you can. Figure out your weaknesses. Build a team around you with people who are good at those things and gifted in them”. She also wants to pass along the message that “I hope people see that you can be a mom and at the same time pursue your dreams”. ANNIKA and her husband welcomed their first kid, a baby boy in July 2021. ANNIKA will be releasing two more songs before the end of year, with a full deluxe album coming soon!
