Raised in the small town of Oliver Springs, Tennessee music wasn’t originally on Rachel McIntyre Smith’s mind. Rather it was a classroom rival that encouraged her to pursue piano lessons. Motivated to rein superior, she also picked up the ukulele, clarinet, and guitar and hasn’t looked back since. Inspired by Kacey Musgraves, Linda Ronstadt, and Taylor Swift, Rachel’s music is country pop with a vintage flare. Her songwriting skills came from her mom, an English major who taught her to write poems. Rachel most enjoys country music’s storytelling aspect and the ability to share her emotions to a larger audience.
Her latest single “Baggage” was written from her own experience with online dating. Being open about going to therapy, he replied saying she had too much baggage. Hurt by the statement, Rachel looked at herself in the mirror and told herself “I’m the whole package.” A confidence booster, “Baggage” was born and relatable to many. Unique to Rachel, she most enjoys performing in cat cafes. Not only can you count on the cat doing something funny in the middle of her set, but it also helps to reduce the nerves and makes the whole experience comfortable. In fact, she launched a concert tour of cat cafes, called The Kitten Coma Tour, to raise money for feline rescue. Unfortunately, it was cut short due to the pandemic. Rachel reflecting on the year saying, “You can’t predict what’s going to happen, so it’s important to have a balance between work and self-care.” Looking forward, Rachel plans to release more music in 2021.
