We spoke with Laura Lynn Danley of Ten Penny Gypsy, an Americana Folk duo started in 2017. Originally a solo artist, Laura has been on stage since she was three years old. She also performed in the local gospel choir. A songwriter too, Laura writes based on her mood. Inspired by Crystal Gayle and Dolly Parton’s generosity and compassion for humanity, Laura hopes her music can influence change for the better.
Teaming up with Justin Patterson to create Ten Penny Gypsy, they recorded their debut album in 2018. Nominated for Album of the Year at the Arkansas Country Music Awards, Ten Penny Gypsy is looking to build off that success with the release of their latest album “Fugitive Heart.” On the album are world class musicians Anthony Crawford and Buddy Case. Justin commenting, “I don't think it's coincidence that these songs came together at this time to form such a poignant collection. There's no doubt they belong in 2020, considering how far apart people currently feel from everything and everybody. The distances grew so fast, it was a difficult surprise for many to process." You can listen to “Fugitive Heart” on all streaming services and on their website here.

A special treat at the end of the concert features children from the military audience on stage singing “Jingle Bells” with Runaway June. “When I Think About Christmas” is an original virtual concert available Friday, December 11th, 2020 through Saturday, January 2, 2021 exclusively on the Armed Forces Entertainment YouTube Channel. Kansas City native Leah Watts was singing before she could talk. Listening to Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, and Carrie Underwood, she took an internship in Nashville at a songwriting company. There she learned the ins and outs of songwriting. In fact, she wrote three original songs while she was there.
Since then, Leah has continued to write about her own experiences. To her “music is something we turn to in hard times and joyous ones.” With that in mind, Leah plans to release a debut album in the coming year. A story from beginning to end reflecting on the highs and lows in life. Hoping to inspire others, she has been involved with multiple benefits including Cure SMA Walk-n-Roll and the R.Y.A.N. Suicide Benefit Soccer Game. These experiences lead to Leah starting her own non-profit, Women on the Rise with a mission to educate, elevate, and empower women in all aspects of music and the music industry. Looking back at her own experiences performing, Leah most enjoys the intimate feel and collaborating during writers rounds.
